Antibacterial and antifungal activities of fatty acid methyl esters of the blind-your-eye mangrove from India BJM
Agoramoorthy,G.; Chandrasekaran,M.; Venkatesalu,V.; Hsu,M.J..
Fatty acids are widely occurring in natural fats and dietary oils and they are known to have antibacterial and antifungal properties. However, little is known on the antibacterial and antifungal properties of the blind-your-eye mangrove (Excoecaria agallocha) and this study for the first time determines the fatty acid composition and the antibacterial and antifungal activities of Fatty Acid Methyl Esters (FAME) of the blind-your-eye mangrove plant found along the coastal areas of south India.

Antifungal and antioxidant activity of fatty acid methyl esters from vegetable oils Anais da ABC (AABC)
PINTO,MARIA E.A.; ARAÚJO,STHÉFANE G.; MORAIS,MARCELA I.; SÁ,NÍVEA P.; LIMA,CAROLINE M.; ROSA,CARLOS A.; SIQUEIRA,EZEQUIAS P.; JOHANN,SUSANA; LIMA,LUCIANA A.R.S..
ABSTRACT Fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) were obtained from vegetable oils of soybean, corn and sunflower. The current study was focused on evaluating the antifungal activity of FAMEs mainly against Paracoccidioides spp., as well as testing the interaction of these compounds with commercial antifungal drugs and also their antioxidant potential. FAMEs presented small IC50 values (1.86-9.42 μg/mL). All three FAMEs tested showed antifungal activity against isolates of Paracoccidioides spp. with MIC values ranging from 15.6-500 µg/mL. Sunflower FAMEs exhibited antifungal activity that extended also to other genera, with an MIC of 15.6 μg/mL against Candida glabrata and C. krusei and 31.2 μg/mL against C. parapsilosis. FAMEs exhibited a synergetic effect with...

Convenient preparation of picolinyl derivatives from fatty acid esters ArchiMer
Dubois, Nolwenn; Barthomeuf, Chantal; Berge, Jean-pascal.
It is essential to have simple rapid methods for the determination of fatty acid structures. Traditionally, fatty acids are analysed by gas chromatography using their methyl ester derivatives (FAME). However, their corresponding mass spectra exhibit molecular ions but are usually devoid of ions indicative of structural features and, notably, the position of double bounds on the aliphatic chains [1]. In the most useful approach to structure determination, the carboxyl group is derivatised with a reagent containing a nitrogen atom. Recently, a convenient method for preparing picolinyl esters from intact lipids has been published [2]. However, some problems occurred in our laboratory when this method was used, leading to some modifications and optimisation....
